Child Dedication

Children are special and amazing gifts from God. As believers, we must recognize that children belong first and foremost to God our Father, which means parents have the awesome responsibility of caring for His children.

At SouthLake, we encourage parents to dedicate their children back to God and commit themselves to raising their children in His ways.

Child Dedication Is:

A time when you recognize that your child belongs to God. You submit yourselves to His rights as Creator.
A time when you acknowledge your stewardship responsibility. It is important to pray daily for God’s direction in your lives, to faithfully attend church and to teach your children the truths of God’s Word in your home.
A time when you acknowledge these truths publicly in the presence of the body of Christ.

Child Dedication Is Not:

A substitute for the child’s ultimate personal responsibility before God. In no way does this guarantee salvation or serve as a substitute for the personal need for children to accept Christ when they are old enough to understand the gospel.
A substitute for your personal responsibility as parents.

Expectations of the Parent

Deuteronomy 6:4-7 reads: “Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.”

This passage first commands parents to love God. If you truly wish for your child to one day love and follow God, your lives must be an example.

This passage also makes it clear that the duty of teaching children belongs to parents. SouthLake can provide weekly instruction, but parents must seize teachable moments as they present themselves.
Questions For Parents to Consider

These are the commitments that are asked of you as you dedicate your child:

Do you recognize Jesus Christ as your personal Savior?
Do you recognize your child as a gift from God and give heartfelt thanks for His blessing?
Do you desire to dedicate your child to the Lord who gave him/her to you?
Do you pledge as parents that you will bring up your child in the nurture and admonition of the Lord?
Do you promise to give your child every possible benefit of home, of school and of church?
